ABOUT ALL ONE BODY

Over their lifetime, Bex Fine-Firesheets has been at least four people. First, Bex was Becky, a young, people-pleasing perfectionist raised in a white-purist United Baptist church in Kentucky. Yet the summer they turned thirteen, their family was abruptly kicked out of their congregation, sending Bex into a dark spiral of disordered eating, self-harm, and housing instability. To survive, Bex buried Becky and their Kentuckian identity, fled to college in Boston, engaged in an unlearning and reeducation process, and became an activist, musician, teacher, and parent in Brooklyn. But their scars, body shame, and obsessive thought loops haunted them.

With themes of queer identity, birth, death, rebirth, decolonization, and radical self-love, All One Body imbues the chronological retelling of Bex’s life with their broad-minded perspectives, opinions, and voice. By unrelentingly showing how Bex transformed the rage and struggle of their childhood into advocacy, this memoir encourages other trauma-riddled readers to do the same. It also empowers activists, communicating the idea that we are all connected through spirituality and nature and should treat others like they are ourselves––like we are one body.

PRAISE FOR ALL ONE BODY

Few memoirs treat spiritual trauma, queer adulthood, Indigenous erasure, and Appalachian whiteness with this degree of nuance. In All One Body, Bex Fine-Firesheets offers a searing memoir of growing up in an insular fundamentalist church in rural Kentucky and their long, complex journey toward selfhood. With unflinching emotional honesty and sharp cultural insight, Fine-Firesheets illuminates the lived effects of Christian nationalism, anti-LGBTQ rhetoric, racial segregation, and generational silence while charting a radiant path toward healing.~Eileen Elizabeth, author of Carrying the Bones: Rituals for a Dying World

Bex Fine-Firesheets does not miss a single, visceral pressure point in a sometimes-maddening race toward the light of their own being. With a powerful level of vulnerability, Fine-Firesheets exposes their messy interiors and gives credence to others to make the same survival migration. All One Body is a personal manifesto of survival that doesn’t ask for patronizing sympathy but a heroic level of admiration.~Davis Shoulders, editor of Queer Communion: Religion in Appalachia
